Does anyone else find it surprising that porn isn’t classified as an addiction?
Alcohol and drugs are considered addictive because they activate similar brain regions and reward circuits, leading to a cycle of craving and reward. While current research does suggest that some people can develop compulsive behaviors around porn, it’s still not officially classified as an addiction like substance use.
I’ve spoken to three therapists, and they all refer to the literature that currently doesn’t recognise porn addiction in the same way as drug or alcohol addiction.
Personally, I’ve used substances like alcohol and tried gambling without becoming addicted, but I can go on porn binges that end up affecting my finances—sometimes even leading to debt. It usually takes me days or even weeks afterward to feel like I have mental clarity again.
